How it works
Everything that goes into a 401(k) for one person — your deferrals, your employer's money and after-tax contributions — shares one 2026 limit of $72,000 (§415(c); catch-up contributions sit on top). Whatever room is left can go in as after-tax contributions and be converted to Roth straight away, if your plan allows both. The value shown compares that Roth money with investing the same amount in a taxable account at 6.5% a year, with a 1.5% dividend yield taxed yearly and gains taxed at the end.
Money God runs these numbers on your real accounts and filed returns — and does the tax math with an exact engine, federal and state.
